There’s exciting news for those tired of their current Gmail address or unhappy with their old username from years ago. Google is working on a new feature that will allow users to change their Gmail address without losing access to their existing emails, files, and data.
The era of changing your Gmail address without deleting your old account is beginning
According to information first noticed by the Google Pixel Hub Telegram group and subsequently reported in the tech press, a quiet update has been made to the Hindi version of the Gmail support page. According to statements on this page, Google has begun gradually rolling out the ability to change the email address associated with the account to all users.
This new system will allow users to replace their current address with a new email address ending in gmail.com. If you make this change, your old Gmail address will continue to work. Your old address will be identified as an alias in the system, and you will be able to use both your new and old addresses when logging into Google services.
Thus, people who know your old address will continue to be able to reach you, while you will be able to communicate with a completely new address. However, this feature comes with some limitations. It states that you will not be allowed to create an additional Gmail address linked to your account for 12 months after the change is made.
It’s worth noting that this update is not yet available on the English version of the support page. The English page still displays a warning that “addresses ending in @gmail.com generally cannot be changed,” and suggests users only change the display name as a solution. It’s still unclear exactly when this feature will be activated globally.
